Holiday 2001/2002
LITTLE ITALY IN ASPEN.
Like Aspen, Marco Tonazzi's home, Valbruna, Italy, is a mountain town.
Its people ski, climb, and generally enjoy the Dolomites that surround
them. But as small as Aspen seems sometimes, Valbruna wins that contest
hands down; its total population is 120. Still, Tonazzi, a former
World Cup ski racer, feels his home has something to offer Aspen,
which is one of the reasons he's opening Valbruna, a shop / café
/ wine bar on the Cooper Avenue Mall. The store, an offshot of one
Tonazzi has owned in Vail since 1998, will sell the hot Italian ski
and streetwear brands Napapijri (inspired by the extreme-skiing aesthetics
of the past few years) and the retro-chic Vampire. |
He'll also sell
Italian ceramics from his region in Italy. The unusual twist is that
the retail shop will be joined by a wine and coffee bar, which will
be run by Tonazzi's close friend Marco Cingolani, who has spent the
past few years managing Aspen's L'Hostaria restaurant. The bar willserve
Lavazza coffee drinks and breakfast items, but the focus will be on
Italian wines, Moretti beer,
and authentic Italian snacks such as panini, meat-and-cheese plates,
and tiramisu. "In Italy, it's what people do," says Tonazzi.
" They meet a friend, have a glass of wine, maybe a snack, then
go home. We think this could really catch on here - a little slice
of Italian life in Aspen."
